Learn the island's geometry first
Fuerteventura looks manageable on a map and humbles you on the road. Corralejo to Morro Jable is more than an hour and a half of straight, windy driving; Cofete sits at the end of the island beyond that. The discipline every resident learns is grouping: north days in the north, south days in the south, one crossing per trip — and never two in the same day if you can avoid it.
Rental car: the rules that matter
A compact car gives you the island, but pick one you will still like after two hours of gusty road, and check the small print twice: insurance excess, deposit and the roads the contract actually allows. The dust lanes around El Cotillo and the north are part of the charm and fine in a normal car; the Cofete track is a different conversation entirely.
The Cofete question
The road to Cofete is an unpaved mountain descent that eats standard hire cars and holiday nerves. If you must drive it, you need written authorisation from a rental company that knows the track; otherwise, treat it as a 4x4 or guided tour day. The view at the bottom deserves the respect of the journey, and rental damage bills are a terrible souvenir.
TIADHE buses and taxis
The TIADHE network connects Puerto del Rosario, the airport and the main resorts with proper schedules, and it works for deliberate journeys — airport to town, resort to resort. It does not work for the island's reason to exist: reaching a beach or viewpoint on your own schedule. Check the official timetable for every essential trip, and keep a taxi number for the evenings the last bus leaves without you.
Transfers and tours: when the car should stay parked
A pre-booked transfer wins on late arrivals, tired children and southern resorts on gusty nights. Organised tours earn their price on the days the logistics defeat you: Lobos with ferry and pickup handled, Cofete with a driver who knows the track, a dive or a sail leaving your hands free. Confirm pickup zones and inclusions before paying, because a transfer that stops at every hotel is a very different journey from one that does not.
The resident's take
On this island the wind is the real transport planner: it decides which beach works, whether Lobos ferries sail and how pleasant a two-hour crossing feels. I tell visitors to rent the car, group the days by geography, and leave one day with no plan at all — because the day the forecast changes, that is the day you will want it.

Do you need a car in Fuerteventura?
Not for a pure resort holiday, but for varied beaches and inland sights a car is by far the easiest option and most visitors should rent one.
Can rental cars drive to Cofete?
Only with the supplier's written permission for the track, which many standard contracts exclude. A 4x4 tour avoids the contractual uncertainty entirely.
How long does the airport-to-south transfer take?
FUE airport is close to Puerto del Rosario and Caleta de Fuste, but the southern resorts such as Costa Calma and Morro Jable involve a drive of over an hour on a good day.
