Fuerteventura: the destination context behind this guide.

Calderón Hondo, Las Peñitas and Pico de la Zarza sit at opposite ends of a long island, and buses do not reach the trailheads. Compare Fuerteventura car hire ↗

Isla de Lobos: book the LobosPass, then the ferry

The small island off Corralejo is the island's best easy hike: a path from the harbour to the Martiño lighthouse, a climb up Montaña La Caldera for the view back to Fuerteventura and Lanzarote, and the lagoon beach of La Concha. Visits are capped at 200 people at a time, and every visitor needs a free LobosPass, which is personal, separate from the boat ticket and can be requested from five days before your visit. Book both, take the first ferry if you can and carry water: there is almost no shade.

Calderón Hondo: the easy crater

From the village of Lajares, a well-marked path of a few kilometres climbs gently through the lava field to the rim of Calderón Hondo, where a platform lets you look down into the crater. It is free, needs no booking and works for families; watch for the ground squirrels that beg along the path, and do not feed them. Sunset and stargazing tours use the same crater after dark.

Pico de la Zarza: the island's highest point

At 807 metres, Pico de la Zarza on the Jandía peninsula is Fuerteventura's highest summit and its most demanding standard hike, starting from the Morro Jable side. The reward is the view down the far side over Cofete beach and the whole western coast. The route is long, steep and fully exposed: start at dawn in summer, carry plenty of water, and turn back if the summit is in cloud, which is common.

Barranco de las Peñitas and Betancuria

In the Betancuria Rural Park, a path from Vega de Río Palmas follows the Barranco de las Peñitas past an old dam to the small Ermita de la Peña chapel tucked into the rock, with the natural arch of Las Peñitas nearby. It is short, quiet and one of the few green corners of the island after rain. Combine it with a visit to Betancuria itself.

Tindaya: look, do not climb

Montaña de Tindaya, in the north-west, is a sacred mountain for the island's first inhabitants, with rock engravings near the summit. Climbing it without written authorisation from the Cabildo de Fuerteventura is prohibited, and people who climbed it to post videos have been identified by the Cabildo and the Guardia Civil's environmental unit. The best view of the mountain is from the Mirador de Vallebrón or from the road at its base.
