Choose the base that cheats for you
Caleta de Fuste keeps doing the family-friendly math in your favour: a transfer short enough to survive, a horseshoe bay that swallows the swell, and a promenade that turns dinner into an evening stroll. Corralejo trades that ease for more to do and more wind; the south trades it for beach-only holidays. Whatever you pick, check three things before booking: pool heating in cooler months, a genuinely separate room, and how far the nearest pharmacy and supermarket actually are.
Beaches: services over postcards
The island's official children's beaches — La Guirra near Caleta de Fuste among them — exist for a reason, and that reason is wind and currents. Start there, follow the flags and lifeguards, and treat the big white beaches as swimming destinations only when the day genuinely allows. A quiet beach with a current is not a quiet beach; it is a lesson.
Lobos: worth it, with a plan
The mini-island is a genuine family highlight — empty beaches, a short walk to the lighthouse, boats to watch. The plan is the thing: first ferry of the morning, sun protection and water for everyone, shade identified before you need it, and honest legs about the walk. Skip it on a choppy forecast; the crossing is not long, but children remember bad seas twice.
Big days: the dunes and the interior
The Corralejo dunes work best early — slides of sand, cold water bottles, done before the wind finds its voice. The interior gives you Betancuria's quiet square and the Antigua cheese museum, which children tolerate for exactly the right amount of time if ice cream follows. Save Cofete for a tour or a 4x4 day; the drive is no place for a tired family in a standard hire car. For a day off the sand, Oasis Park at La Lajita fills a whole day with animals, gardens and a camel ride.

The formula that works here: one main activity, one unplanned hour, and pool time at the end of the day. Fuerteventura rewards slow mornings and early beach exits, and the children who enjoy it are the ones whose parents did not try to photograph the whole island.
