Corralejo: variety and the north
Corralejo is the only Fuerteventura base that feels like a proper town rather than a resort that happens to face the beach: restaurants around the old harbour, ferries to Lobos at the end of the street, and the dunes within ten minutes of town. The wind is part of the deal here, but so is the evening life. The honest trade-off is distance — Cofete and the far south are a proper day trip, not a spontaneous drive.
Caleta de Fuste: central and convenient
Caleta de Fuste is the sensible-shoes choice: a sheltered horseshoe bay, a short transfer from the airport and a position that balances north and south day trips better than anywhere else. It will not win a beauty contest against the smaller fishing villages, but for a first trip with family it is the base that goes unnoticed precisely because everything works.
Costa Calma and Morro Jable: beach-focused south
The south is the long-white-beach side of the island, and the wind is its soundtrack. Costa Calma sits beside the Sotavento lagoon where the kitesurfers fly; Morro Jable blends a genuinely broad beach with town services, a marina and the old fishing quarter worth one evening. Both create a proper drive to Corralejo and Lobos, so treat the north as one planned excursion, not a daily option.
El Cotillo and rural stays
El Cotillo is where I send people who want the island's edges: lagoon-like coves that stay calm when the Atlantic side does not, sunsets that end the day properly, and surf atmosphere without the crowd. Lajares and the inland villages suit travellers with a car who traded resort convenience for quiet. Confirm evening food — one place closes and the town goes dark — and treat steep dust roads as part of the stay's character.
The resident's shortlist
Everyone together and needs something for each mood: Corralejo, no hesitation. Families who want calm and a short transfer: Caleta de Fuste. A holiday that is essentially a beach with a hotel behind it: Costa Calma or Morro Jable. Repeat visitors, surfers and sunsets: El Cotillo. And the warning I give every first-timer: Fuerteventura is long — if you sleep in the north, plan your Jandía day with the same care as your flight, not the same carelessness the map invites.
