Renting a car: best for independent sightseeing

Lanzarote's major sights are spread across rural areas. A car makes it practical to combine Timanfaya, El Golfo and La Geria or Jameos, Cueva de los Verdes and Mirador del Río. Compare the deposit, accepted card, insurance excess, fuel policy and whether pickup is in-terminal or reached by shuttle.

Public buses: useful routes and limitations

IntercityBus Lanzarote, commonly called the guagua, connects Arrecife, the airport and the main tourist towns. Services are useful for point-to-point travel but rarely form an efficient attraction-hopping itinerary. Timetables vary, so check the official operator before every important journey.

Airport buses and late arrivals

Aena lists line 161 between the airport, Puerto del Carmen and Playa Blanca, with additional late services on lines 61 and 162. Lines 22 and 23 connect the airport with Arrecife on weekdays and weekends respectively. Confirm the latest timetable for your arrival day; a transfer is safer when the last useful bus is uncertain.

Taxis, transfers and organised tours

Taxis suit direct airport or evening journeys. Pre-booked transfers are useful for groups, child-seat requests or late arrivals. Guided tours solve the hardest sightseeing days without a car, but confirm pickup coverage because a tour may collect from major resorts and not from a rural villa.

Unpaved roads and protected areas

A normal rental agreement may exclude unpaved roads even when a tourist map shows vehicle access. This matters at Papagayo and on volcanic tracks. Read the contract, do not assume an SUV permits off-road use and use a guided 4x4 activity when the route itself is the experience.
