Which Papagayo beach should you choose?
The protected coast includes Papagayo itself as well as Playa Mujeres, Playa del Pozo, Caleta del Congrio, Puerto Muelas and smaller coves. Papagayo has the iconic sheltered horseshoe view; Playa Mujeres is larger and often simpler for families; Caleta del Congrio feels wilder and is commonly used by naturists.
Driving, parking and walking access
The final road into Los Ajaches is unpaved. Check whether your rental agreement permits this surface and drive slowly. Access arrangements and conservation charges can change, so verify locally rather than relying on an old blog post. From Playa Blanca, walking is possible but exposed, with little shade and longer distances than the map may suggest.
Facilities and safe swimming
Treat the coves as a natural area: shade, toilets and food options are limited and vary by location. Bring water, sun protection and footwear for rocky paths. Papagayo is often sheltered, but Atlantic conditions still change; check flags and local advice and supervise children at the waterline.
Combine Papagayo with Playa Blanca
Playa Blanca is the practical base for supplies, restaurants and an easier promenade after the coves. A 4x4 south-coast tour can combine Papagayo with El Golfo and volcanic scenery when you prefer not to drive the access road yourself.
