Puerto del Carmen: best all-round base
Puerto del Carmen is the honest all-rounder: several beaches, the island's widest choice of restaurants and nightlife, and a short hop from the airport. It is the easiest choice when different people in the same group want different things — and the least likely base to disappoint. Los Pocillos is calmer and more spacious, Avenida de las Playas is where the evening pulse lives, and the old harbour keeps its fishing-town soul and the locals' actual eating places. Just mind the steeper streets climbing the headland.

Playa Blanca: calm evenings and Papagayo
Playa Blanca is the resort that grew up quietly: a long promenade, predictable services and the island's most relaxed evenings. Sunset from the seafront here is a daily ceremony, and the coves of Papagayo are the shortest drive on the island. The trade-off is honest: Jameos del Agua, Cueva de los Verdes and the far north mean proper driving time, so plan those as full-morning trips.

Beachfront on the Papagayo side of Playa Blanca: six pools, a thalasso spa and suites with a small kitchenette, which suits longer stays and families. The seafront promenade towards Marina Rubicón passes the hotel.

Costa Teguise: beaches, wind sports and the north
Costa Teguise has the easiest resort layout on the island, restaurants gathered around Pueblo Marinero, and beaches with real personalities: sheltered El Jablillo for small children, Las Cucharas where the windsurfers set up when the trade wind arrives. Its east-coast position cuts driving time to the Manrique attractions and northern Lanzarote compared with Playa Blanca — worth counting if your plan leans that way.

Barceló Teguise Beach – Adults Only
Adults-only on the seafront, a few minutes' walk from Las Cucharas beach, with an infinity pool. A practical base for windsurfing days and for driving to the north of the island.

Arrecife: local city life
Arrecife suits travellers who want local cafés, an urban waterfront and public-transport connections over a conventional resort. Playa del Reducto provides a proper city beach, and Charco de San Ginés is the atmospheric centre where islanders come for coffee and calamari. It has fewer resort facilities but works genuinely well without a car, which most resort bases do not.
Rural Lanzarote: quiet stays that need a car
Haría suits the greener north, Caleta de Famara the surf-and-sunset crowd, Teguise historic atmosphere, and La Geria or the inland villages couples hunting seclusion among the vines. The fine print of rural stays is always the same: check restaurant opening days (many close two days a week), heating in winter and drive times before choosing an isolated property.

First visit and you want everything on one coast: Puerto del Carmen, no hesitation. Families who want the calmest rhythms and Papagayo mornings: Playa Blanca.
