San Sebastián: ferry convenience
The capital is the base that never fights your plans: the ferry pier at one end of town, restaurants and services in the middle, and the eastern routes behind you. It suits short stays, car-free travellers and anyone whose trip is really Tenerife plus a day here. The cost of that convenience is honest: Valle Gran Rey and the north are climbs away, whatever the map suggests.
Valle Gran Rey and Playa de Santiago
Valle Gran Rey is the valley that keeps people: black-sand coves where the waves ease off, sunsets that draw the whole town to the seafront, and walks that start from the hotel door. The village is built for staying, not passing through, which is precisely its strength. Playa de Santiago, on the southern coast, offers the quieter opposite — low-key, close to the airport, and a good base when the plan is Garajonay from its nearest side.
Hermigua, Agulo and rural stays
The green north is where the island shows its other face: terraced valleys, the laurel forest hanging overhead, and villages like Hermigua and Agulo that feel a century from the coastline. Walkers should seriously consider it; everyone else should consider the clouds and the roads it comes with. Confirm parking and evening food before booking, and accept that a nearest-looking house may take forty twisting minutes to reach.
