The ferry: less a commute, more a day out
The crossing from Los Cristianos to San Sebastián takes about 50 minutes on a comfortable catamaran, and it starts the day well: dolphins on the way over are common enough that no one sees them as a stroke of luck. The honest day-trip maths is on the other side — the forest, the coast and the port are separated by roads the locals call shortcuts only affectionately. Take the first sailing you can face, and treat the return ferry time as the fixed point the whole day orbits.
Garajonay: the forest time forgot
Garajonay is the reason the island was declared a World Heritage Site: a prehistoric laurel forest that survives because the summit of La Gomera catches the trade-wind cloud, drip by drip, all year. Walking it feels like stepping into an earlier climate — moss-hung trunks, roots running over the path, the sound of water where there is no stream in sight. The park's visitor centre explains the forest and the island's other claim to fame, the whistled language El Silbo that herders used across the ravines. Guided tours from Tenerife fold in the ferry, the driving and a local guide, which is the sensible way to see it in a day without turning the journey into work.
Valle Gran Rey and the whale coast
The south-west of the island is its other face: Valle Gran Rey's terraced gorge dropping to a black-sand beach, and San Sebastián's quays where the pilot-whale boats leave for the channel with Tenerife on the horizon. On a single day, choose the forest or the coast as the headline and let the other happen by the road. The Los Órganos basalt cliffs are best seen from the small excursion boats that pass between the whale grounds and the rock wall — the kind of thing residents take visitors to see because the scale of it does not survive a photo.
Doing it properly: one loop, one calm
Residents' rules for a Gomera day: one circular route, one long lunch, no third destination added 'since we're close'. If you rent a car at the port, match the office hours to your ferry times, and leave a 45-minute margin for the return drive that any map will insist is ten minutes. The road over the top — tunnelled through the mountain to reach the south — is the island's main artery and its own scenic act: cloud on one side, coast on the other.
