Stay in Puerto del Carmen

Lanzarote's most convenient all-round base

The honest verdict

Puerto del Carmen wins on convenience: close to the airport, broad beaches, the island's liveliest evening choice and a central-southern road position. It is less serene than Playa Blanca and less architecturally distinctive than smaller towns, but it wastes the least holiday time.

Choose the right part of Puerto del Carmen

The resort name on a booking site can cover very different walking distances and evening atmospheres. Match the neighbourhood before comparing hotels.

01

La Tiñosa / old town

Harbour atmosphere, restaurants and nightlife; hillier away from the water.

02

Playa Grande

The central first-visit choice for beach, avenue and evening variety.

03

Los Pocillos

Broader, calmer family layout; the beach can feel exposed on windy days.

04

Matagorda

Quieter, flatter and near the airport, but removed from old-town evenings.

Transport reality

Airport arrival

Lanzarote Airport is very close by road. Arrecife Bus lines 61, 161 and 162 run from the airport to Puerto del Carmen; a taxi is often proportionate for a short journey, while a transfer becomes useful for groups, late arrivals or exact door-to-door certainty.

Without a car

Strong. The Avenida de las Playas links the main beach zones, taxis are plentiful, Arrecife Bus runs line 2 to Arrecife, line 3 to Costa Teguise and line 12 to the Sunday Teguise market, and excursions cover Timanfaya. The old town and Matagorda sit at opposite ends, so choose accommodation near the part you will use most.

With a car

Excellent base for exploring the whole island. Keep the car for compact sightseeing days and check parking at the accommodation, especially near the oldest and busiest streets.

When the beach plan fails

Keep these alternatives ready

  • →Casa José Saramago in Tías after checking opening
  • →Arrecife and Charco de San Ginés
  • →A booked winery visit in La Geria
  • →Playa Chica may feel more protected than Los Pocillos, but obey local flags

Eat beyond the hotel

The local-food move

Walk beyond the most obvious avenue menus. La Tiñosa and the harbour give you more character, while a driving day through Tías, La Geria or the central teleclubs supplies the local-food contrast.

Frequently asked questions

Is Puerto del Carmen a good base for exploring Lanzarote?

Yes. Its central-southern position, short airport transfer and broad excursion coverage make it the island's most convenient all-round base.

Which part of Puerto del Carmen should I stay in?

Choose Playa Grande for the easiest first visit, La Tiñosa for harbour atmosphere and nightlife, Los Pocillos for a broader family layout, or Matagorda for a quieter, flatter stay.

Can you explore Lanzarote from Puerto del Carmen without a car?

You can cover the resort and major organised excursions without one. A rental car gives much more control over villages, viewpoints and combining several smaller stops.
