Stay in Puerto de la Cruz

A walkable northern town with gardens, history and real street life

The honest verdict

Puerto de la Cruz is Tenerife's best resort-town compromise for travellers who value character, greenery and evenings on foot. Choose it over the south for atmosphere and the Orotava Valley; do not choose it solely for guaranteed beach weather or frequent south-coast boat trips.

Choose the right part of Puerto de la Cruz

The resort name on a booking site can cover very different walking distances and evening atmospheres. Match the neighbourhood before comparing hotels.

01

La Ranilla / old town

Best for atmosphere, restaurants, street art and walking everywhere.

02

Martiánez

Convenient for the pools, promenade and a polished seafront stay.

03

Playa Jardín

A quieter western edge with beach access and a longer walk to the centre.

04

La Paz

Leafy, calm and elevated; expect hills between the hotel and seafront.

Transport reality

Airport arrival

Tenerife North (TFN) is the easier airport for this base. Tenerife South works, but it creates a much longer cross-island transfer; compare the flight saving with the added ground journey.

Without a car

Good inside town and for La Orotava, La Laguna and Santa Cruz: TITSA line 102 runs to La Laguna and Santa Cruz, and line 343 to both airports and Costa Adeje. Teide has a public bus from Puerto de la Cruz, but its fixed timetable leaves less flexibility than a car or tour.

With a car

Recommended for Garachico, Icod, rural food stops and viewpoints. Avoid using it for every town day: central parking is more effort than walking once you are settled.

Historic architecture and the natural partner to Puerto.

Teide National Park

Full day

A dramatic northern ascent; official bus line 348 departs from Puerto.

Garachico and Icod

Full or long half day

Volcanic coast, heritage and the north-west landscape.

La Laguna and Anaga

Long day

UNESCO streets and cloud forest, best treated as one early route.

When the beach plan fails

Keep these alternatives ready

  • →La Orotava's historic centre and museums
  • →A long lunch in a guachinche after confirming opening
  • →Lago Martiánez when sea conditions limit natural bathing
  • →La Laguna only if its forecast is better—the north can share the same cloud

Eat beyond the hotel

The local-food move

Puerto has unusually strong restaurant density for its size. Use La Ranilla and the old town for evenings on foot, then go uphill into the Orotava Valley for guachinches and wine-country cooking.

Frequently asked questions

Is Puerto de la Cruz a good base for Tenerife?

Yes for a walkable town, the green north and local atmosphere. It is less convenient for repeated south-coast excursions and usually has more cloud than Costa Adeje.

Can you stay in Puerto de la Cruz without a car?

Yes. The centre is compact and TITSA connects the main northern towns and metropolitan area. A car becomes valuable for rural viewpoints and a flexible north-west itinerary.

Which airport is best for Puerto de la Cruz?

Tenerife North is the convenient airport. Tenerife South has more international flights but creates a substantially longer transfer across the island.
