Stay in Playa Blanca

Calm beaches, family-friendly streets and Papagayo on the doorstep

The honest verdict

Playa Blanca is Lanzarote's strongest family and relaxed-couple base: sheltered-feeling beaches, a long promenade and Papagayo close by. The trade-off is distance from Teguise, Haría and the northern visitor centres, so full-island sightseeing needs discipline.

Choose the right part of Playa Blanca

The resort name on a booking site can cover very different walking distances and evening atmospheres. Match the neighbourhood before comparing hotels.

01

Town centre

Best for restaurants, the bus station and an easy evening walk.

02

Marina Rubicón

Polished waterfront, market days and access towards Las Coloradas.

03

Las Coloradas

Best road position for Papagayo; quieter and more spread out.

04

Montaña Roja / Faro Pechiguera

Space and sunsets in the west, but less convenient without a car.

Transport reality

Airport arrival

Lanzarote Airport (ACE) is the only airport. Playa Blanca is at the southern end of the island; Arrecife Bus lines 61 and 161 run from the airport via Puerto del Carmen when the timetable fits, or compare taxi and transfer costs for late arrivals and groups.

Without a car

Comfortable for a resort week. The promenade, beaches, Marina Rubicón and town centre are linked locally, line 60 runs to Arrecife and line 13 to the Sunday Teguise market, while boats and organised tours cover several headline days. Papagayo logistics still need planning.

With a car

Worth having for two or three concentrated sightseeing days rather than automatically for the whole stay. It makes Timanfaya, La Geria and northern loops much easier.

From your hotel, not from an imaginary centre

Build your free days

One free day

Playa Blanca and Papagayo

  1. 1Early Papagayo visit before the busiest period
  2. 2Lunch back around the old waterfront
  3. 3Promenade walk to Marina Rubicón
  4. 4Sunset from the western promenade

Three free days

The south and volcanoes

  1. 1Day 1: Papagayo and Playa Blanca
  2. 2Day 2: Timanfaya, El Golfo and Los Hervideros
  3. 3Day 3: La Geria with a teleclub or village lunch

Five free days

Add the north carefully

  1. 1Keep the three-day plan
  2. 2Add Teguise, Jameos and the northern coast as one early loop
  3. 3Use the final day for a Fuerteventura ferry or a slow beach day

What genuinely fits from here

Papagayo beaches

Half day

The defining natural-beach outing from this base.

Timanfaya and El Golfo

Full day

The south-west volcanic circuit fits naturally from Playa Blanca.

La Geria

Half or full day

Wine landscape and inland villages on the road north.

Corralejo, Fuerteventura

Full day

Direct ferry option, but do not treat the crossing as a quick extra stop.

When the beach plan fails

Keep these alternatives ready

  • →Yaiza and a village lunch
  • →La Geria winery visit with a booked tasting
  • →Marina Rubicón and the promenade between showers
  • →Move a Papagayo day rather than forcing it in strong wind

Eat beyond the hotel

The local-food move

The seafront is easy but highly visitor-oriented. Mix one waterfront dinner with Yaiza, Uga or a teleclub stop on a driving day; that is where the island's food culture becomes more distinctive.

Frequently asked questions

Is Playa Blanca the best part of Lanzarote for families?

It is one of the strongest family choices because it combines serviced beaches, a long promenade and broad accommodation choice. Pick the exact neighbourhood carefully if you will not hire a car.

Do you need a car in Playa Blanca?

Not for a resort-focused week. A car is valuable for independent Timanfaya, La Geria and north-island days; hiring for part of the stay can be the best compromise.

Can you walk to Papagayo from Playa Blanca?

It is possible from the Las Coloradas side, but heat, exposure and the distance between coves matter. Carry water and do not assume a promenade-style walk.
