Stay in Las Palmas

A real city with one of the world's great urban beaches

The honest verdict

Las Palmas is the base for city life: Las Canteras, one of the finest urban beaches anywhere, the old town of Vegueta, markets, museums and restaurants that serve locals. It is not a resort, and the north is often less reliably sunny than the south, so beach-first holidays belong in Maspalomas or Mogán. For food, culture and a car-free stay, nowhere on the island matches it.

Choose the right part of Las Palmas

The resort name on a booking site can cover very different walking distances and evening atmospheres. Match the neighbourhood before comparing hotels.

01

Las Canteras and Santa Catalina

The beach, the promenade and the busiest choice of restaurants.

02

Guanarteme

The surf end near the Auditorio Alfredo Kraus, with everyday local food.

03

Vegueta and Triana

The historic old town and the shopping streets, best for sightseeing on foot.

04

Ciudad Jardín

Quieter and green, around Parque Doramas and the Pueblo Canario.

Transport reality

Airport arrival

Gran Canaria Airport is outside the city on the east coast. Global line 60 runs directly between the airport and Las Palmas; a taxi or pre-booked transfer is more direct to your door.

Without a car

The best car-free base on the island: Las Canteras, Vegueta, Triana and the markets are walkable or a short city-bus ride. Global lines 1 and 91 run to Puerto de Mogán, and lines 5, 30 and 50 to Maspalomas.

With a car

Useful for Arucas, Teror, the north coast and the mountains, but parking is the catch in the city: confirm your accommodation's parking before booking a car.

When the beach plan fails

Keep these alternatives ready

  • →Museums in Vegueta: Casa de Colón, the Museo Canario and CAAM
  • →The city's markets
  • →Parque Doramas and the Pueblo Canario
  • →When the north is cloudy, the south is often sunnier: Global line 91 reaches Mogán

Eat beyond the hotel

Frequently asked questions

Is Las Palmas a good place to stay in Gran Canaria?

Yes for city life, food, culture and a car-free stay, with a real beach on the doorstep. Choose the south instead if dependable sunshine and resort facilities come first.

Can you swim at Las Canteras?

Yes. La Barra, a volcanic reef offshore, shelters much of the beach, although conditions change with the tide. Surfers use the end near the Auditorio Alfredo Kraus.

How do you get from the airport to Las Palmas?

Global line 60 runs directly between the airport and the city. A taxi or pre-booked transfer is simpler with luggage or a late arrival.
