Traditional dishes

Papas arrugadas with mojo, sancocho, ropa vieja, goat, rabbit and gofio preparations form part of the island's traditional table. Menus vary by area and season; ask about daily dishes and portion size rather than ordering only familiar resort staples.

Cheese, fish and salt

Gran Canaria is known for varied cheeses, including distinctive northern traditions, as well as artisanal fishing and sea salt. Ask which fish is fresh, whether it is priced by weight and where cheese was produced. A geographic label on a menu is not enough evidence by itself.

Fruit, coffee, sweets and wine
