Maspalomas & Playa del Inglés
The southern resort belt is where most visitors stay, drawn by the dunes — the golden wall of sand that separates the coast from the beach hotels. Maspalomas is the upmarket end: golf courses, quiet gardens and the light of the dunes at sunset. Playa del Inglés is livelier: a long strip of shops, bars and restaurants with a famously welcoming LGBTQ+ scene, and the best sunset walk on the island along the dune's edge. Both have direct, year-round-sunshine beach access. If most days will be spent in the resort, compare a short Maspalomas rental with keeping an airport car parked all holiday — there is no point paying for days it never moves.

A large resort at Meloneras with lagoon-style heated pools, a spa and a casino, about 800 m from Maspalomas beach. The upmarket end of the south, close to the dunes and the lighthouse promenade.

Puerto Rico & Puerto de Mogán
These are purpose-built terraced resorts clinging to the cliffs, quieter and more family-oriented than the Playa del Inglés strip. Puerto de Mogán is the star — white walls, bougainvillea and canals, the prettiest harbour town in the Canaries, complete with the Friday market locals actually go to. Its bluff neighbour Puerto Rico keeps prices sane and is the honest answer for boat trips, dolphin watching and watersports, which all leave from this side of the island.

Built like a Canarian village around tropical gardens, a few minutes' walk from Mogán's harbour and beach, with pools, a spa and a Michelin-starred restaurant on site.

Las Palmas de Gran Canaria
The capital did not add a city beach — it kept one. Playa de las Canteras runs for over three kilometres through the city's best neighbourhood, and the old town of Vegueta brings museums, historic squares and tapas bars to a stay that never feels like a resort. Gran Canaria Airport is outside the city: line 60 connects it with the centre, while a taxi or pre-booked transfer is more direct. Check accommodation parking before keeping a rental car in the city — the locals' trick is to drop the car at the resort garage and walk.

The city's historic grand hotel, set in Doramas Park with gardens, a pool, a rooftop bar and Michelin-starred dining. Las Canteras and Vegueta are each about ten minutes away by taxi.

The quiet middle: Arucas, Telde & the north coast
Between the city and the resorts, the island keeps its own pace. Arucas has the neo-gothic rum cathedral where the island's best distillery still works; Teror has the prettiest square in the Canaries under a canopy of trees; and the north-coast fishing villages like Agaete draw weekend crowds from the city for fried fish by the water. These stays need a car, and they reward it: you wake where the island actually lives, and drive to the beaches on your own schedule.
The resident's shortlist: who should stay where
First trip with the extended family and everyone needs a pool: Maspalomas or Playa del Inglés, full stop. Small children, quiet days and boat trips: Puerto de Mogán. City energy, food and culture — choose Las Palmas and stop reading: the north is the island's soul and the south its business. Couples who have done the resorts: a renovated house in Arucas or Teror with a rental car. And the winter note: Gran Canaria's winter sun is the real deal, but in December and January trust the southern coast, not the mountains, for your daily dose of golden hour.
