Stay in El Cotillo

Calm lagoons, big sunsets and surf without the resort crowd

The honest verdict

El Cotillo is the base for travellers who want the island's edges: calm lagoons, sunsets that end the day properly and surf atmosphere without the crowds. It is small and quiet, services are limited and you will want a car. Choose Corralejo instead if you need nightlife, restaurant choice or a car-free holiday.

Choose the right part of El Cotillo

The resort name on a booking site can cover very different walking distances and evening atmospheres. Match the neighbourhood before comparing hotels.

01

Old harbour and village centre

Fish at the port, the fishing-village feel and dinner on foot.

02

Lagoons side, to the north

Quieter stays beside the reef-sheltered lagoons, a walk or short drive from the harbour.

03

Tower and the southern beach

Surf, sunsets and the old Tostón tower, with more wind and swell.

04

Lajares, a few minutes inland

The surf village with cafés and a little more life, easiest with a car.

Picked your part of El Cotillo? Check stays for your dates

The search opens on El Cotillo. Add your dates, then check the map: whether a property sits in Old harbour and village centre, Lagoons side, to the north, Tower and the southern beach or Lajares, a few minutes inland changes your walk to the beach and restaurants more than its star rating does.

Transport reality

Airport arrival

Fuerteventura Airport is on the other side of the island, roughly 45 minutes by road. A rental car or pre-booked transfer is the practical arrival. By bus, TIADHE line 07 runs from Puerto del Rosario and line 08 from Corralejo; check the current timetable.

Without a car

Only for a slow stay built around the village, the lagoons and the harbour. Buses exist but are not frequent, and most of what makes the north special starts a drive away.

With a car

Recommended. Lajares, Corralejo, the dunes and Calderón Hondo are short drives, and the car is what makes a quiet base practical. Some beach access is by dirt track: check what your rental contract allows before you take it.

Calderón Hondo

Half day

A volcanic crater walk close to Lajares, best early or late in the day.

Corralejo and the dunes

More choice, the dunes natural park and the Lobos ferries, about half an hour away.

Faro del Tostón

1–2 hours

Lighthouse and coastal viewpoint north of the village; its fishing museum is listed as temporarily closed.

When the beach plan fails

Keep these alternatives ready

  • →The lagoons are often calmer when the open Atlantic side is rough, but tide and swell decide
  • →Corralejo when El Cotillo's wind is up
  • →An inland lunch in Lajares or La Oliva
  • →Check flags every day: the southern beach is a surf beach, not a pool

Eat beyond the hotel

The local-food move

Fresh fish at the old harbour is the reason to stay in for dinner. The village is small, so check which places are open that evening, especially out of season, and add Majorero cheese and goat dishes inland around La Oliva.

Frequently asked questions

Is El Cotillo a good place to stay in Fuerteventura?

Yes for a quiet stay built around the lagoons, sunsets and surf. It is less suitable for nightlife, restaurant choice or a holiday without a car; Corralejo is about half an hour away when you want more.

Are the El Cotillo lagoons good for children?

They are the most sheltered swimming on this coast, protected by reef, but conditions still change with the tide and the swell. Check them on arrival and follow the flags.

Do you need a car in El Cotillo?

For most holidays, yes. Buses exist but are infrequent, and Lajares, Corralejo, the dunes and the volcanic walks are all short drives.
