Stay in Arrecife

Lanzarote's capital: a lagoon harbour, a city beach and every bus line

The honest verdict

Arrecife suits travellers who want local cafés, an urban waterfront and public transport over a conventional resort. El Reducto is a proper city beach and the Charco de San Ginés is where islanders come for coffee and calamari. It has fewer resort facilities, but it works without a car better than any resort base, because the island's intercity bus lines start here.

Choose the right part of Arrecife

The resort name on a booking site can cover very different walking distances and evening atmospheres. Match the neighbourhood before comparing hotels.

01

Charco de San Ginés

The lagoon where the island's first fishing settlement grew, with bars, restaurants and the Wednesday and Thursday flea market.

02

El Reducto

The city beach: about 500 metres of golden sand and calm water behind a reef.

03

Centre and Calle Real

Shops, restaurants and the Saturday market in Plaza de Las Palmas.

04

Marina Lanzarote

Shops, restaurants and leisure by the marina.

Transport reality

Airport arrival

Lanzarote Airport is a few kilometres away. Arrecife Bus lines 22, 22.1 and 23 connect it with Arrecife, and a taxi is quick and usually proportionate.

Without a car

The strongest car-free base on the island: line 1 runs to Costa Teguise, 2 to Puerto del Carmen, 60 to Playa Blanca, 9 to Órzola for the La Graciosa ferry and 20 to Caleta de Famara.

With a car

Useful for Timanfaya, La Geria and the north. Check your accommodation's parking, because the centre is busy.

When the beach plan fails

Keep these alternatives ready

  • →The MIAC in the Castillo de San José
  • →The Castillo de San Gabriel and its history museum
  • →Calle Real and the markets
  • →El Reducto's reef keeps the water calm, but check the flags

Eat beyond the hotel

The local-food move

The Charco de San Ginés is the local-food move, for fish and an evening where islanders eat. The centre's streets add everyday cafés, and a northern day can end with lunch inland.
