Tenerife base guide
The capital: markets, Carnival, Anaga and the tram to La Laguna
The honest verdict
Santa Cruz is the base for city life: the Mercado de Nuestra Señora de África, the Auditorio and TEA, Carnival, Las Teresitas beach and the Anaga trails on the doorstep, with the tram to historic La Laguna. It is not a resort, and the north-east is often cloudier than the south, so beach-first holidays belong in Costa Adeje or Los Cristianos. For food, culture and a car-free stay, it is the strongest base on the island.
The resort name on a booking site can cover very different walking distances and evening atmospheres. Match the neighbourhood before comparing hotels.

The search opens on Santa Cruz de Tenerife. Add your dates, then check the map: whether a property sits in City centre, Waterfront and port, San Andrés and Las Teresitas or La Laguna, next door by tram changes your walk to the beach and restaurants more than its star rating does.

Tenerife North (TFN) is the closer airport. From Tenerife South, TITSA line 111 links the south with Santa Cruz via the airport junction; a taxi or pre-booked transfer is simpler with luggage.
The best car-free base on the island: the tram runs to La Laguna, TITSA line 102 goes to Puerto de la Cruz and line 111 to the south. Las Teresitas and Anaga are reachable by bus with some planning.
Useful for Anaga's trailheads, Teide and the north coast. City parking is the catch: confirm your accommodation's parking before booking a car.

Eat beyond the hotel
The Mercado de Nuestra Señora de África is the place to start. Add an evening in La Laguna's bars and, with a car, a guachinche in the north for the island's most traditional food.
