Stay in Puerto Rico

Reliable sunshine, a family beach and the south-west's boat harbour

The honest verdict

Puerto Rico is the practical sunshine base: a small family beach in a sheltered valley, a harbour full of dolphin-watching and fishing boats, and prices that stay sensible. The resort climbs the valley sides in terraces, so the walk back to your apartment matters. Choose it for boat trips, water sports and an easy family week, not for character or a long beach.

Choose the right part of Puerto Rico

The resort name on a booking site can cover very different walking distances and evening atmospheres. Match the neighbourhood before comparing hotels.

01

Valley floor and beach

Flat, closest to the beach, shops and restaurants.

02

Harbour

Boat trips, fishing charters and dolphin-watching departures.

03

Terraced hillsides

Views and quieter apartments, with a steep walk back up.

04

Amadores side

The neighbouring quiet beach, with calmer hotels.

Transport reality

Airport arrival

Gran Canaria Airport is on the east coast, along the southern motorway. A transfer or rental car is the practical arrival. By bus, Global line 91 stops at the airport on its way to Puerto Rico, and lines 33 and 39 run from Playa del Inglés.

Without a car

Workable: the beach, harbour, shops and restaurants are in the valley floor. Global line 33 continues to Puerto de Mogán and line 39 to Playa del Cura. Check how far uphill your accommodation is before booking.

With a car

Useful for the mountains, the west and the Maspalomas dunes. On the terraced hillsides, check parking and the gradient of the access road.

When the beach plan fails

Keep these alternatives ready

  • →The sheltered valley often keeps its sun when the coast is windy
  • →The Angry Birds Activity Park for children
  • →Puerto de Mogán's harbour and lanes
  • →Check flags before swimming

Eat beyond the hotel

The local-food move

The valley covers easy resort meals. For fish by the water, go to the harbour or to Puerto de Mogán; for traditional food, plan a lunch inland on a mountain day.

Frequently asked questions

Is Puerto Rico a good place to stay in Gran Canaria?

Yes for reliable sun, a family beach, boat trips and sensible prices. It is less suited to travellers who want character, a long beach or to avoid steep walks.

Is Puerto Rico hilly?

Yes. The resort is built in terraces up the valley sides, so check the walk from your accommodation to the beach before booking.

How do you get from Puerto Rico to Puerto de Mogán?

Global line 33 runs from Playa del Inglés through Puerto Rico to Puerto de Mogán. A car or taxi is quicker if you are carrying beach gear.
