Stay in Los Cristianos

The old fishing town of the south, with the ferry to La Gomera

The honest verdict

Los Cristianos is the south's most down-to-earth resort: a former fishing enclave that has kept its seafaring air, a town beach and a working port with ferries to the western islands. It is better value than Costa Adeje and has a real town around it, with less polish; the busier strip of Playa de las Américas starts next door.

Choose the right part of Los Cristianos

The resort name on a booking site can cover very different walking distances and evening atmospheres. Match the neighbourhood before comparing hotels.

01

Port and old town

The fishing-town core: restaurants, the ferry terminal and evening strolls.

02

Town beach and seafront

Closest to the sand and flat walks, the easy choice with children.

03

Towards Playa de las Américas

Livelier, with more nightlife and the long seafront promenade.

04

Uphill residential streets

Quieter and often cheaper, with a walk back up from the beach.

Transport reality

Airport arrival

Tenerife South (TFS) is the nearest airport, a short drive away. A taxi or pre-booked transfer is simplest with luggage; TITSA's airport lines 111 and 343 end at the Costa Adeje bus station nearby.

Without a car

Very workable: the beach, the port, the promenade and the shops are on foot, and the seafront continues towards Playa de las Américas. Ferries to La Gomera leave from the port.

With a car

Useful for Teide, the west and the north. Check your accommodation's parking, because streets near the beach and the port fill up.

Ferries leave from Los Cristianos port; a day trip needs the first and last sailings checked.

Playa de las Américas

At the base

The resort strip next door, with beaches, water sports and nightlife.

El Médano and Montaña Roja

Half day

The wind-sport town and its natural monument on the south-east coast.

Teide National Park

Full day

The volcano and its landscapes. TITSA line 342 stops in Los Cristianos on its way to the cable car; a car or tour gives more flexibility.

When the beach plan fails

Keep these alternatives ready

  • →The port and old town when the beach is too windy
  • →A La Gomera day if the sea is calm and the forecast there is better
  • →Teide is often above the clouds, but check the park conditions first
  • →Check flags before swimming

Eat beyond the hotel

The local-food move

Fish near the port is the local move in a town that grew from a fishing enclave. For traditional northern food, plan a lunch on a La Laguna or Anaga day.

Frequently asked questions

Is Los Cristianos a good place to stay in Tenerife?

Yes for value, families, ferries to La Gomera and a real town around the resort. Choose Costa Adeje for more polish, or the north for greenery and historic towns.

Can you get to La Gomera from Los Cristianos?

Yes. Ferries leave from Los Cristianos port. Check the current sailings, and the last return, before planning a day trip.

Is Los Cristianos the same as Playa de las Américas?
