Stay in El Médano

The wind town of the south, beside Montaña Roja

The honest verdict

El Médano is the south's wind town: one of its most charming beaches, windsurf and kite schools, and the Montaña Roja natural monument at the end of the sand. It is a real town rather than a resort, right by Tenerife South Airport. The wind that makes it famous also makes some beach days blustery, so choose it for the atmosphere and the sports, not for sheltered sunbathing.

Choose the right part of El Médano

The resort name on a booking site can cover very different walking distances and evening atmospheres. Match the neighbourhood before comparing hotels.

01

Town centre

Cafés, restaurants and the town beach on foot.

02

Beachfront towards Montaña Roja

Closest to the long beach and the natural monument.

03

Quieter outskirts

Residential and calmer, a walk or short drive from the centre.

Transport reality

Airport arrival

Tenerife South Airport is in the same municipality, a short taxi ride away, which makes this one of the easiest arrivals on the island.

Without a car

Workable for a wind-and-beach stay: the town, the beaches and Montaña Roja are on foot. Teide, the west and the north need a car or tours.

With a car

Useful for Teide, Los Cristianos, La Laguna and the north, and for choosing a beach according to the wind.

When the beach plan fails

Keep these alternatives ready

  • →Watch the windsurfers and kiters when it is too blowy to lie on the sand
  • →Granadilla's old town inland
  • →Teide is often above the clouds, but check the park conditions first
  • →Check flags: wind and swell change fast here

Eat beyond the hotel

The local-food move

The town's cafés and seafront restaurants cover easy evenings. For traditional food, head inland towards Granadilla or plan a northern day with a guachinche lunch.

Frequently asked questions

Is El Médano a good place to stay in Tenerife?

Yes for wind sports, a relaxed real town and a short airport transfer. Choose Costa Adeje or Los Cristianos if calm, sheltered beach days matter most.

Is El Médano always windy?

Often, which is why windsurfers and kitesurfers come. Plan beach time around the forecast rather than expecting shelter.

How far is El Médano from Tenerife South Airport?

Very close: the airport is in the same municipality, a short taxi ride away.
