La Palma Travel Guide: Hiking, Stars & Volcanoes
Everything you need to plan a trip to La Palma — Caldera de Taburiente, stargazing, the 2021 eruption route and practical tips.

Caldera de Taburiente National Park
This is La Palma's crown jewel — a massive erosion crater 10 km across, with waterfalls, pine forests and trails that range from easy walks to full-day treks. The guided hike from the park entrance down to the caldera floor is one of the best day walks in Spain.
Stargazing & the Roque de los Muchachos
La Palma is a UNESCO Starlight Reserve with some of the clearest night skies on Earth. The observatory at Roque de los Muchachos is a world-class research facility. Evening stargazing tours use high-end telescopes and expert guides — a must-do even for casual sky-watchers.
The Tajogaite eruption route
The 2021 Cumbre Vieja eruption created new lava fields that you can now visit on guided walks. Seeing the raw volcanic landscape up close with a volcanologist guide is a powerful experience. The visitors centre explains the geology and the impact on local communities.
Driving around La Palma
A rental car makes independent trailheads, viewpoints and stargazing locations easier to reach, but La Palma's steep, winding roads make journey times longer than the map may suggest. Compare airport and local pickup, choose enough comfort for mountain routes and check current access conditions before each excursion.
