Three days: the island's signature
The classic three: one day of Caldera de Taburiente viewpoints or a suitable walk, one day at Roque de los Muchachos when access and weather allow, and one day in the volcanic south — Fuencaliente's volcanoes, the salt pans and a swim if the forecast cooperates. The summit must go first, because cloud arrives with the afternoon and its own opinions.
Five days: add forest and town
Day four earns the north-east: Los Tilos and the laurel forest, green when the south is brown, best after rain and early. Day five is the slower one — Santa Cruz's old town, Los Llanos' cafés or Tazacorte's sunset, depending on where you sleep. Do not stack distant trailheads on the same day just because the island looks small on the map.
Seven days: walk and weather insurance
A week lets the island become a rhythm instead of a checklist: a second real hike, stargazing on a night the summit clears, a beach or natural-pool morning, and one deliberately unplanned day. That spare day is not wasted — it is the one the clouds will demand from you, and you will be glad to give it.
The resident's planning rules
Three rules survive contact with the island: put high-altitude and exposed plans in the morning and the best forecast window; book nothing non-refundable that depends on a summit; and let the evening belong to the coast — a sunset in Tazacorte or a walk through Santa Cruz repairs any day the mountain refused.
