Valverde and the north-east
Valverde is the small-island capital in the truest sense: the airport, the port and the island's services all answer to it, and restaurants stay open when the rest of the island has gone quiet. Tamaduste and La Caleta, ten minutes down the coast, add the sea to that formula — volcanic swimming coves with the practicalities still close. The map's honesty: from here, La Restinga and the southern coast are the island's far side.
Frontera and El Golfo
Frontera is my usual answer to the 'where exactly?' question: a working town with real services, sitting between El Golfo's greenery, the natural pools at La Maceta and Charco Azul, and the western viewpoints above the cliffs. Stay here and the island splits into four comfortable day routes rather than two long ones. It will not redefine travel, but it is the base that quietly makes the holiday work.
La Restinga and El Pinar
La Restinga is a diving town first and a village second — and for divers that ordering is perfection, with the Mar de las Calmas calmness and the dive operators on the street where you sleep. El Pinar, uphill, offers rural stillness and the walkers' south coast. Both share the island's honest fine print: restaurants close in the off-season, so confirm dinner plans and bring a coat on the mountain road.
The resident's shortlist
Diving is the trip: La Restinga, and plan the rest of the holiday around it. First-time sightseeing across the whole island: Frontera, whose position does the work. Arriving late, leaving early, or needing everything at hand: Valverde. And the tip every Hierro visitor eventually needs: this island lives on its own hours — wherever you stay, check dinner opening days, and let the natural pools set your swimming schedule rather than the reverse.
