Tenerife

Teide, whales & eternal spring

Tenerife is the largest and most varied of the Canary Islands — and for most first-timers, the easiest choice. The sunny south is where the beach resorts and the reliable weather are; the green, misty north is the real, local Tenerife most visitors never see. In the middle rises Mount Teide, the highest peak in Spain and one of the best stargazing spots on Earth.

Know before you go

Best for

First-timers, families, and anyone who wants a bit of everything — beaches, mountains, hiking and nightlife.Maybe skip if: travellers after a small, quiet, untouched island.

When to go

Great year-round; the south stays warm even in winter. Spring and autumn are ideal for hiking and fewer crowds.

Getting around

A rental car is worth it to see beyond the south. Buses (guaguas) are cheap and cover the main routes.

💡 Local tip

If you only see the south, you haven't really seen Tenerife. Head north to Garachico and La Orotava — and do Teide at night for the stars.
